Unilateral declaration made by Belgium
Following the signature of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, on the one hand, and Japan, on the other hand, Belgium emphasises the importance it attaches to the provisions regarding human rights and weapons of mass destruction as included in the agreement. With regard to the articles 2.1., 5.1. and 43.4., Belgium underlines that the wording used in the above agreement can under no circumstances be used as a reference for the framework agreements with third partners to be negotiated or concluded in the future. Belgium therefore advocates the continued use of the customary provisions in accordance with the decisions made by the Council in this respect.
